Is depression and anxiaty a mental disorder?
I admire a lot the people that face depressive moments and circumstances with bravery and determination. And I have the same feeling with people that deal with constant anxiety. Life is hard and complicated, and often some people are not given the right tools to adapt and reach "happiness". I also considered that people that go through a hard time are given the wrong tools to mentally survive and thrive through challenges. Some of them are the social belief that depression and anxiety are mental disorders that need to be treated with chemicals and medications and that is a dangerous and sadly broad way to think. But the real questions to make and approach this serious and delicate topic are as follows: is chemical unbalance real and if so can we beat these emotions on our own? how dangerous is it to believe the concept of depression and anxiety a mental disorder?
I think chemical unbalance is real, but the tricky part is that is real in a different way than we have been told. The concept is that if you go to a therapist and you are diagnosed as clinically depressed, you were born with a broken mind and you have bad luck because there is nothing you can do to change that. Just mitigate the circumstance. That is false but is a very appealable lie that too many people believe because it entitles people to different things. Like not being able to engage with people too much. They just think they will never can. I have seen people that drop college and can not maintain a job because they do not meet the expectations, and after that, they just keep playing video games and people can not tell them anything because it threatens their humanity. Is hard to approach this topic like I am because it feels like people will look at me like this prideful person that has no struggles and therefore is not capable to understand. But the real perspective of the people to drop college for example is that they are just not willing to do hard things when they deep down think they don't want to because that would take them out of their comfort zone. it is known that if you smile randomly you will naturally feel happier because your brain associates a smile with being happy. imagine something so small like that can make a change in a moment, that is a beautiful thing. Is also the reason why people get into the habits of bad thoughts and bad habits. if people have bad experiences constantly and they related that to their existence and see how those situations mold their mind and they start believing they deserve to feel like that. now on top of that imagine if society makes those people think that they were born like that and they need help because they are just subjects to be acted upon. Then they experience depression and anxiety for long periods and think they are depressed all the time when in reality emotions change and can be controlled.
That way of thinking is very dangerous because it takes away one of the most important concepts of existence. Free will and power of agency. God created us to be agents in this life and not subjects to be acted upon. The things that we think and the things that we do as the habits we create are factors that mold who are. If we look to have more ambitions, goals, positive thoughts, thoughts that assimilate reality in a real way, we will start seeing life differently. There are some techniques that we can do that will help to relieve stress and put us in a better mood. but the whole idea of this post is for you to know, that you can reach for help but not chemically because you have power and control of your life.
